FALL SESSION RUNS September 14 - December 13, 2009
Hip-Hop Drop In - For Youth Ages 10 - 17
Come out and break, pop, lock, till you drop with Vince and Wayne.
Music Lessons
Come out and learn how to play electric guitar, bass, keyboard or the drums for $50 for 5 sessions for 30 minutes each. For youth 10 - 17. Lessons held in the Z music room on various days.
YMCA Youth Leadership Development
The Z collaborated with 6 neighbourhood associations to create a better-than-ever Youth Leadership Development Curriculum. It's called L.E.A.D. which stands for Leadership Excellence Asset Development. This is a 12 week curriculum designed to give teens a solid foundation of leadership skills. Youth Leadership programs look great on a resume. Youth will learn about themselves, others and the world in a safe and supportive environment. They'll learn how to lead others and the value of volunteering.
Leaders in Training Summer Day Camp - For Youth ages 12 - 14 years who have not completed any of the other Youth Leadership Programs listed below. During this camp, youth gain experience in order to become a volunteer at YMCA day camps. This week will be focused on building skills to work with children in a YMCA Day Camp setting. Learning Leaders - For Youth in Grades 5 & 6
Start to build your leadership skills. Learn what leadership is, in a fun and interactive setting
L.E.A.D. 1 - For Youth in Grades 7 - 10
This is 12 week certificate course and 100% attendance is strongly encouraged. Fee: $15 (for the cost of the course manual, t-shirt and an end of session celebration)
L.E.A.D. 2 - For Youth in Grades 7 - 12
Put your leadership skills into action by making a difference in your community. Youth must complete L.E.A.D. 1 or Leader in Training Summer Day Camp (offered in July) to be eligible to take L.E.A.D. 2.
Youth Leadership Development programs (other than day camp) begin every September. Beginning in late August, please register for leadership programs at the YMCA Member Services Desk.
Birthday Parties - For Youth Ages 11 and up
Have your birthday party at The Z. Your party includes all the games in the main Z room, plus a swim in the YMCA pool.
Parties can be booked for Sundays 12-3pm (excluding long weekends).
Fee: $80 for YMCA members, $104 for non-members
Call the Z for more details. Register at YMCA Member Services Desk at least two weeks before the day of your party.
Youth Centre Council - For Youth Ages 12 and up including parents
The group meets monthly to make decisions about The Z's programs, activities, policies, and events. Have your say in how The Z runs. Join the council!
Just Hangin' Out - For Youth Ages 13 - 17 who have a physical or cognitive challenge
Make new friends and plan your own activities. That's the idea behind this new program for teens with disabilities. Teens are invited to meet once a week at the Z Beside The Y for food and fun from 5 - 8 p.m. The program includes dinner, recreational activities, guest speakers and outings. If you're not sure if this program is for you, please call the Z for more information. This program was created by the Inclusive Recreation Task Force of Cambridge, and is operated in partnership with KidsAbility with funding from President's Choice Children's Charity and the City of Cambridge. Registration for this program will begin in late August for the program to start up in October. Financial assistance available through Social Services at Home (SSAH).
Wise Guys - For Guys Only Ages 12 - 15
Talk about the issues that every guy faces on his road to becoming a man: healthy relationships, peer pressure, etiquette and hygiene. This group will begin again in autumn.
Just Us Girls - For Girls Only Ages 12 - 15
Talk about issues that every teen girl faces including peer pressure, self-esteem, healthy relationships, etc.
Financial Assistance
No one is turned away from registered programs if they cannot afford the full fee. The YMCA can help. Call 519-623-YMCA ext 306 for more details.
Alternative Programs
The Z beside the Y is home to one of Waterloo Region District School Board's Alternative Programs. During school hours five days a week, students in grades 9 and 10 from across the city attend this alternative school. This program is operated by the Waterloo Region District School Board. Drop-In Activities
Dinner Time - For Youth Ages 12 - 17
Learn how to prepare adn make a variety of easy dinners that you can make at home. Fee: $1.50 each day or ask a staff how you can earn your dinner for free.
Teen Drop-in Recreation - For Youth Ages 12 - 17
Pool tables, foosball, air hockey, table tennis, card, video games, and more. Come and go as you please.
Computer Access - For Youth Ages 12 - 17
Chat on line, print off your resume or surf the net.
Jam Sessions - For Youth Ages 12 - 17
We need more volunteers to help out in the Music Room. Contact us if you can help out by repairing some equipment and teaching/supervising other musical youth. Bring your own instruments or borrow ours for jam sessions. Keyboard, drums, PA and guitar available.
Band Shows - For people of all ages who love good music
Saturday nights you can enjoy several local bands. Support our home-grown talent. Contact the Z if your band is interested in playing at one of our shows. Watch our announcements section for more information regarding upcoming shows.
